Challenges DAOs face in their pursuit of becoming sustainable organizations in a relatively young and heavily tech-oriented industry are plentiful.

As with any new technology, there are challenges that come with it. In the case of DAOs, one of the biggest challenges is becoming a sustainable organization in a relatively young and heavily tech-oriented industry.

One example of a DAO facing these challenges is Juicebox DAO, a funding protocol built on Ethereum. In a recent podcast episode, we talked to Filip, a contributor to Juicebox DAO about the challenges in the DAO. Despite having a revenue model based on protocol fees and direct contributions, the DAO is spending more money than it is making, and there is concern that it will not be able to sustain itself in the long run.

One of the reasons for this is the unpredictability of the industry. The success of DAOs is often tied to the success of the projects they fund, and these projects can be unpredictable in terms of their popularity and revenue streams. While some projects may raise millions of dollars in funding, others may struggle to attract any attention at all. Some of the bigger projects that have driven a lot of fees in the Juicebox protocol were Contitution DAO and Assange DAO.

Another challenge is the need to appeal to different audiences. As DAOs become more mainstream, there is a need to appeal to both the crypto community and a wider general audience. This can be a difficult balance to strike, as the needs and desires of these two groups can be very different. The "Degens" are simply not a enough.

Despite these challenges, DAOs like Juicebox are continuing to push forward and find ways to become sustainable organizations. One approach is to focus on projects with recurring expenditures and more consistent revenue streams, such as payroll and other business expenses.

Ultimately, the success of DAOs will depend on their ability to adapt and evolve in a rapidly changing industry. As more people become interested in blockchain technology and decentralized governance, DAOs will play an increasingly important role in the future of communities and organizations.
